If you think you could use it, it seems well made and performs well enough for me. I get that it's not for everyone, but then. But it works nice for having 2 HDMI monitors and easy USB-A connectivity, and my wife uses it more than I thought she would too. I'm not worried about it sticking out and it seems sturdy enough, and like you said there's a very short cable included if that's how you want to use it. I bought one too during the kickstarter (actually, bought 2) and I've had a pretty positive experience with it as well on my M1 Pro and also my wife's M1 Air. I'm using it on a 2018 MBP, the four-TB-only model, so it adds a bunch of functionality. However, I expect that was probably left out for cost reasons. My only wish is that the HDMI was bidirectional so I'd not have to drag my Camlink 4K along as well when recording video. It's solidly attached when in use, and not difficult to detach.
